When Vanya Hargreeve’s character wasn’t written as 100% gay I assumed that Leonard must have been an important part of the comics, and that they creators of the Netflix Umbrella Academy must have been staying true to the comics, but Leonard wasn’t even a character in the comic! Vanya had no romantic interest in the comic, which means that Vanya could have any sexuality in the Netflix adaptation! So here are my reasons why Leonard should have been “Leah” instead:

• Ellen Page would get to play a gay character (like she deserves)

• Allison’s comment on how Vanya has never really loved anyone/ been in a serious relationship would sting more because Vanya would have struggled with her sexual identity, and that would have prevented her from pursuing romantic relationships

• Klaus would be the only sibling who would realize that Vanya was gay, and would try to subtly hint to her that he accepts her

• Can you imagine a beautiful and charming woman seducing Vanya into going off her medication instead of weird, slimy Leonard?

• Ellen Page having a PG-13 sex scene with a woman

• When Allison expresses concerns that Leah is being shady and manipulative, Vanya would assume her sister was being homophobic, which would further push Vanya into Leah’s grasp, thus raising the stakes

• Ellen Page would get to play a gay character (like she deserves)
